The Redondo Beach House by De Maria Design
This beachfront property was created from recycled steel shipping containers. This construction makes the home more than just eco-friendly; it is also resistant to termites, fire and mold. The vast majority of the home was assembled in a shop to cut down on money and waste.
The Ecopod
Recycled materials make up every aspect of this home. The walls are birch paneling, the floors are recycled car tires and the rest is made from a shipping container.
The Rothstein-Meckler House
A perfect combination of style and sustainability, this home earned an LEED platinum rating, an indoor airPLUS certification and an Energy Star rating. The home is over 40 percent more efficient than the average American home built in 2006.
The Tree Home
This Varna, Bulgaria, home uses solar panels for energy and collects rainwater for irrigation.
The Crawford Winter White House
Former President George Bush’s home makes the list because of its incredible geothermal heat pump. The pump powers the home with 25,000 gallons of stored rainwater and does not use any fossil fuels. The house’s stone exterior was made from scrapyard finds, and waste water generated filters through a purifying tank and ends up in a cistern.
